EWGA Rocks with LPGA at
Blackhawk Submitted by Alice
Miller
What an
exciting time! EWGA NEB was fortunate enough to put together a
fantastic team to marshall hole #9 for the LPGA, Longs Drug
Challenge at Blackhawk 10-4 - 10-7. Mary Ann
Pate and I were the official team captains. We even
had a two-way radio to communicate with a network of marshalls and
officials throughout the course.
A very special "Thank You" goes out to Mary Ann Pate,
Meredith Pence, Patricia Ramirez, Ilene Marshall, Paula Heckler, Pat
Block, Joan Robledo (Fresno EWGA), Cathy
Willis (San Joaquin EWGA) and Julie
Gonzalez (SF EWGA).
Our team was strategically placed on the tee, drop zone and
around the green on hole #9 for the four days of the
tournament. We were there to keep an eye on the players' ball
and to assist with the gallery. We had front row seats to all
the fabulous shots made by these amazing women, and to witness some
very exciting moments.
Hole #9 was a long 540 yards, dog-leg right with a grove of
trees just before the drop zone. It was so inspiring to see
these women hit
the ball and have it drop consistently at 225 yards. Most
shots were right down the middle, so long and so consistent.
We even witnessed several eagles on #9. One nail-biter
happened on Friday when Lorena Ochoa and
Suzanne Pettersen were in the leading groups
playing as a twosome. Ochoa hit her ball under the Blackhawk
grandstand and Pettersen was on in two and proceeded to eagle the
hole.
On the final day after our shift was complete on our hole we
were asked to advance to the 18th green. We took up our
positions along the lake in front of the gallery and in the main
grandstand behind the green. Pettersen shot a course record 64
on Saturday leaving her at an amazing 12 under for the tournament on
that day.
The grand finale was to witness the amazing tie breaker between
Ochoa and Pettersen who both finished at 10 under on Sunday.
To break the tie they were to play #18 over and over in a
sudden-death playoff. Amazingly they both birdied the hole the
first time around. We all began to wonder how long this would
go on when they landed their second round of balls on the green in
the same place as the first time. This time Ochoa did not make
her long putt and Pettersen sunk hers to win.
The organizers were so impressed with our team they have
offered us the same hole again next year, so watch the chapter
calendar for the LPGA dates at Blackhawk an sign up to join the fun
in 2008. | |
