Spotlight on Jane Taylorson
spotlight

Jane received the award for Most EWGA Events Participated in 2006 and Most Improved Golfer in 2005. Lora Lee Del Rosario, Communications Chairperson, asked Jane about her golf interests:

Lora Lee: How many years have you been golfing?

Jane: I've been playing since about May 2000. It took a few months before I had the courage to go out on a course. I was afraid I'd be digging trenches in the fairways - I was right! My first lessons were from someone who wasn't terribly good, but he got me out on the course with a minimal swing. The next teacher helped me get the ball airborne - of course, now I can't get the ball down when I need to. The next teacher was great at teaching the swing - I took the Breaking 100 class with her as well and that helped a lot. And I took one of Elinor's workshops which was very helpful in the short game. Each instructor helped me get a little better and get my score down.

Lora Lee: Why the interest?

Jane: Originally, I was just looking for something that involved some exercise. I didn't think it would be as difficult as it was - a lot of hefty guys and old folks play so how tough could it be? Boy was I wrong. As soon as I started, I was hooked. Watching the pros at the Samsung and Kraft Nabisco just made me want to get better. It took awhile to learn what makes up a swing. I've been putting it together piece by piece - but I still don't have every piece you need.

Lora Lee: How many rounds a year?

Jane: I play between 40 and 45 rounds a year, depending on the weather. I won't play in rain - except in Hawaii!

Lora Lee: What important tidbit have you learned that has helped your game?

Jane: The most important thing is to focus. It's also the most difficult. There are so many parts to the swing to remember that it's hard to turn off your mind when you set up to the ball. You need to think about what you need to do during the practice swing. When you're ready to hit you have to shut your mind up and watch the club hit the ball - easier said than done (as anyone who has played with me can attest!).

Lora Lee: "What's in the bag?"

Jane: Ping i5 (4 iron though pitching wedge plus sand wedge); Cleveland 53 degree gap wedge; Nike Sasquatch 3 wood; Cobra 5 and 7 woods; Nike Sasquatch driver (but I also use other drivers from time to time); Never Compromise putter.

Lora Lee: What are your other interests and hobbies?

Jane: I love to read, especially mysteries. When I'm not feeling too lazy, I like to go to movies. My favorite thing (and hers) is to sit under my cat and just hang out.
